BIG IRON DISC GOLF COURSE
The logo for Big Iron Disc Golf Course pays tribute to the heritage of Legion State Park, the legacy of Paul "Big Iron" Thompson, and the bold direction disc golf is headed. The mark features a strong, timeless crest inspired by the Camp Palila scout patch arrowhead, linking it to the park's rich history. At the top of the logo, a tribal eagle from the original Camp Palila patch stands proudly as a heroic symbol.
Prominent within the crest is a seven-pointed star, a nod to Big Iron's role as a Highway Patrolman, capturing a sense of honor and dedication. This other star represents the Bonnie Blue Flag, which adorned Big Iron’s truck. Both evoke the magic of stargazing under the clear Legion skies.
A central element of the logo is a disc, soaring with motion and precision, celebrating the joy and skill of disc golf. underlining the design is a mighty hatchet, where the subtle shape of a “5” pays homage to Big Iron’s time as Scoutmaster for Troop 5 in Louisville, Mississippi.
Rounding out the design are four feathers hanging from the hatchet representing Big Iron's wife and three daughters. While he never had a son, Big Iron served as a father figure to hundreds of young men.
The logo’s palette reflects the natural and symbolic beauty of Legion State Park and disc golf: Legion Green represents the lush, thriving flora of the park and Big Iron’s service as a Park Ranger. Patrol Gold honors his time in uniform, while Scout Law Red symbolizes the lasting legacy of mentorship, loyalty, and leadership that Big Iron brought to his community.
